With a keen eye for detail and a profound passion for classic sophistication, the Milieu (meel·yoo) Interior Design team has been creating spectacular, timeless interiors for their discerning clientele for 15+ years. Janessa and Stephen Gertz are the dynamic principals behind the brand; sought after for their unique ability to infuse a bit of old-world elegance into their signature contemporary designs.

Immediately after college, Stephen began his career interning for several of the most prestigious design firms in the Midwest. Working on A-list projects from downtown to the Gold Coast and New York, Gertz became a break-out star; was nominated for the Merchandise Mart’s “Who’s Who” and Cambridge’s “The One to Watch”. Soon after Stephen launched his own firm in Chicago.

After graduating from Harrington Institute of Interior Design School in 2005, Janessa’s impressive pedigree includes designing for internationally renowned retailers then eventually starting her own private firm. Clients soon sought out her signature style of a balanced, trad-mod mix, and Janessa’s firm became incredibly successful.

It was 2016 when Stephen and Janessa merged both their personal and professional lives and Milieu Interior Design was born. Since their inception, the Gertz team has created magnificent projects from high rises to brownstones, to North Shore stunners. Prestigious commercial clients include NBC Tower Lobby in Chicago, Water Tower Place Residence common areas, and the charming bed and breakfast Robyn’s Inn in historic Pontiac Michigan. Known for their incredible work ethic and attention to detail, Milieu Interior Design is not only dedicated to the aesthetic creative process but is diligent about the business side of interior design as well. Together the two have become a formidable force in the industry and have been featured in numerous international, online, and regional publications.
